Bush to Nominate Judge Samuel Alito for SCOTUS
CNN and
MSNBC are reporting that President Bush will formally nominate 3rd Circuit Court of Appeals Judge Samuel Alito for the Supreme Court. Judge Alito has a strong conservative record and is often compared to Justice Antonin Scalia. Expect a battle from liberals during confirmation.

According to this report, President Bush will make the announcement of his nominee at 8am EST.

He actually believes that the constitution is supposed to be followed, to the letter of the law....doesnt he know that judges are supposed to do what they feel is right regardless of what is in the constitution? New Delhi Bombings - Update
(New Delhi) The number of dead from yesterday's three near-simultaneous
bombings at locations (
map) in New Delhi has grown to over 60 with around 200 injured, some seriously. Investigators have detained over 20 suspects in raids of small hotels around New Delhi. It is now known that two of the bombs exploded amid large shopping crowds at Paharganj and Sarojini Nagar. The third bomb, however, was on a
bus at the market of Govindpuri.
Police said they were looking for a man in his 20s who refused to buy a ticket on a bus and got off in the Govindpuri neighbourhood, leaving behind a large black bag. When some of the 40 passengers raised an alarm, the driver and bus conductor examined it and threw it out just as the blast occurred, injuring them both.
The media are in almost universal agreement that those responsible
belong to a little-known small terrorist group.
A man saying he represented the terrorist group "Islamic Inquilab Mahaz," or "Front for Islamic Uprising," took responsibility for the bombings in a call to the Kashmir News Service in Jammu and Kashmir. The little-known group is tied to the Pakistan-based Lashkar-e-Taiba, the most feared terrorist group in Kashmir, police said.
The caller, who identified himself as Ahmed Yaar Ghaznavi, said the attack "was meant as a rebuff to the claims of Indian security groups" that terrorist fighters had been wiped out by military crackdowns and the October 8 South Asian earthquake.
Not everyone, though, agrees that Islamic Inquilab Mahaz (IIM) is a little known group as indicated by this

The group that has claimed responsibility for Saturdays serial blasts in Delhi -- Islami Inqilabi Mahaz -- is neither unknown nor unfamiliar in India. According to terrorism analyst Ajai Sahni, it is just another name for Lashkar-e-Taiba, which is based in Pakistan under the influence of ISI and is the best known successor organisation of Al-Qaida.
The ISI is Pakistan's
Inter-Service Intelligence agency. A rogue element in the Pakistani government, ISI has strong links to Wahabism and radical Islamic political and military groups. Even so, a Pakistani Foreign Office spokesman
stated that "the attack in a crowded market place is a criminal act of terrorism."

A day after the deadly blasts shook the Capital, the security brass indicated it had reasons to believe it was the handiwork of familiar jehadi module -- Pakistan's Inter Services Intelligence operatives.

development, the trial of Lashkar-e-Taiba militant Mohammad Arif alias Ashfaq, believed to be a triggering circumstance for the New Delhi bombings, has concluded. Ashfaq was sentenced to death by a Delhi court.

Charles Martel is truly one of the greatest men in the history of Western Civilization. And when the French were great, they truly were the bravest, and yes, possibly the most foolish of the European knights. The charge of the French knights at Nicropolis, and the subsequent capture and beheading of 3000 of them by the Turks is certainly one of the most gruesome and tragic incidents in the European struggle against the jihad.
Some of my ancestors are from the Rheims area of France and my cousin has made it her second job to discover and point out what was the greatness of France. And she still believes in France, I do not.

Well, I was sympathetic to the Miers nomination for no better reason, really, than that it brought back my youth a bit. But to be honest, except for the fact that I was young my youth wasn't especially noteworthy. The decision made here is going to be between one guided by cronyism (or loyalty/friendship, to put it in a softer light) and outright elitism. Harriet was probably a 700 or so on the scale of logic, but not much more than a 500 in verbal ability, so she's tanglefooted. The next nominee will be at least a 700 in both verbal and logic/math, which is a good thing for the country. But at that level bear in mind that he/she won't be very cognizant of the common weal. Said nominee will have been in special classes from the time he (it will be a "he") learned to read, and may not have actually bought a loaf of bread or a gallon of milk in quite awhile. Sobeit; it's the very essence of the Jeffersonian ideal whereby the country is informed and led by a meritocracy composed of exceptional leaders and scholars emerging from the mass of humanity.
It is, a turning point.

However, in much less elegant terms, what scares the snot out of me is that no one else seems to know or care that the Big Lie is being repeated and repeated and repeated. Well humans "propagate" when they reproduce, whether in or out of wedlock, so there's nothing inherently evil about it. It just means to expand in frequency from a reference point. And the "information war" is definitely a real aspect of the Terror War, so refusal to counter the lies of the enemy with the truth amounts to a refusal to propagate the truth, at its own expense. (Most truths are not self evident, in spite of the propaganda to the contrary.) I think what gave propaganda a bad name is that it's not constrained to the truth, and the techniques are the same whether you're propagating the truth or a lie.
We could stand to be a lot better at it than we are, I think.

Christian Schoolgirls Beheaded
(Poso, Indonesia) Three Christian girls walking to school were beheaded earlier today by men in black clothes and masks near the Muslim town of Poso. The town lies about 1,000 miles northeast of Jakarta and is in a region of considerable Muslim-Christian strife. This story
makes me sick.

National police spokesman Aryanto Budiharjo said up to six men in black clothes and masks attacked the students in Bukit Bambu village, on the eastern island of Sulawesi.
"The perpetrators wore black attire and veils and they used machetes to slash (the victims)," he told reporters in Jakarta.
The three headless bodies of the high school students, dressed in brown uniforms, were left at the site of the attack. Three heads were found at separate locations two hours later by residents.
Earlier, a police official in Poso gave a different account, saying two men wearing helmets on a motorcycle attacked the 16-year-old students.
He said the student who escaped said the attackers wore helmets and carried a two-way radio.
The killings have been condemned by President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono who called the murders "sadist and inhuman crimes."

Bomb Blasts in New Delhi, Scores Killed
(New Delhi, India) Three powerful
bombs were detonated today in crowded shopping areas (
map) of the capital city. The first blast occurred about 5:40pm IST at the main market in Paharganj, a popular meeting area for foreign tourists and backpackers. Another explosion followed in Sarojini Nagar, a busy shopping area popular among the middle class and foreigners. Soon after, the teeming market of Govindpuri was attacked. Police, fire brigades, bomb disposal teams, and anti-terror squads rushed to the scene as the whole city was placed on
security alert.
Thus far, reports on the number of casualties have been sketchy. The dead and injured are expected to be numerous. Most places were unusually crowded due to the upcoming Diwali festival, a major Hindu holiday during which families exchange gifts, light candles and celebrate with fireworks.
It's unclear who is responsible for the blasts, but Minister of State for Home Sriprakash Jaiswal stated that the attacks were "handiwork of those who were backed by anti-India elements."
"From preliminary observations, it can be said the explosives were kept in a cycle rickshaw or a motorcycle. At least 40 are injured and six to eight people have expired," Delhi Police Commissioner KK Paul told reporters in Paharganj.
According to Home Secretary V.K. Duggal, an alert was sounded in all states for possible terrorist attacks during the Diwali season.
The Guardian reports that a bus was bombed in addition to the shopping areas.
Rediff India reports that 50 people are dead and 70 are injured. Also, the blasts are suspected to be the handiwork of banned Pakistan-based Lashker-e-Toiba outfit.
HindustanTimes.com reports that:
- 48 are confirmed dead,
- Police raid hotels in Paharganj,
- Home Ministry says RDX was used in blasts,
- Two suspects arrested at New Delhi Railway Station,
- Blasts being blamed on an intelligence failure.
A top advisor to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh stated that the bombings were surely the work of terrorists but which group is unknown at present. Opposition from numerous terrorist groups constantly faces India. From fringe organizations to militarized Kashmiri rebels, India has its enemies.

Having once been interrogated by a former FBI agent and his partner regarding suspected union activity while in federal employ (they were on the wrong track, but that's a different story that I'm not at liberty to discuss), I can speak to some of the techniques possibly used. All Bluto did was relate a relevant story as a possible scenario. And he's right. I've been questioned by the FBI before too. I was sneered at and derided,
not for "not recollecting", but for actually "not knowing". The only advantage I had was that they were in my own living room and I could have told them to leave.
We don't know exactly what it was that Libby "didn't recollect", or what he may have "recalled incorrectly" or if he flat out lied. Rubyeyes, you said yourself, "Why lie?" Why indeed.
You have already convicted him based only on what you've been told. That's fine. You're not on the court or jury. I'd like to think that if you were, you'd be more open minded.
I say let them do their job. They felt they had enough evidence to indict, but they don't convict at the same time for a reason. I'll accept what ever comes down the pipe because I trust our system even if the whole story stinks to high heaven. It stinks as much as Delay's indictment, and I don't even particularly like Delay. No one here is outright claiming his innocence. They're simply saying not to convict him yet.
I'd also like to know why Miller didn't write the story that SHOULD have been written. The bigger story surrounding this makes Plame's identity look like child's play. If Miller had done the job that she's sworn to do, this would have taken another direction and she'd be up for a Pulitzer.
The CIA and FBI (many long timers in the DoD as well) are fighting two huge, HUGE, issues right now and they're looking worse than ever. They dropped the ball in 2000 and again in 2002 and have engaged in covering up their ineptitude ever since. They're the one's who have compromised our national security to the point that Plame looks like a bimbo starlet who has unwittingly wandered onto the stage.
The Democrats should be going after much bigger fish than Rove, Libby or Delay if they want to re-establish credibility. But they're too partisan to do that.

Wasn't that awful? and I thought the "homage" to the game was laugh-out-loud bad. I felt like I was in the Jaycees' haunted house in the old downtown bank.
Plus the real terror of the game was the fact that these were F'IN EVIL-ASS DEMONS FROM THE PITS OF HELL. The movie had to get all rationalistic in explaining how they came about.

As to the LA Times article about Iraq being the same as Vietnam: It was refreshing to see a MSM report that correctly tells the public how we “lost” in Vietnam. Everyone seems to have forgotten that we had withdrawn and left the war in the Vietnamese’s hands, then cut them off. We did something somewhat similar in Iraq after the 1991 war. Additionally, the Democrats are now trying to criminalize any action they can of any Bush Administration personnel to defeat the Republicans in the next election; then they can vote to cut the war funding as Senator Leahy and others want.
These people have absolutely no survival instincts as it relates to America and its citizens. But I do. While historians believe only 1/3 of the colonists supported the War of Independence, the Declaration of Independence was still issued and states: “That whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the Right of the People to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new Government, laying its foundation on such principles and organizing its powers in such form, as to them shall seem most likely to effect their Safety and Happiness. Prudence . . . .” The Declaration is part of the United States Code. Therefore, some might believe that we the people have the right and obligation to protect ourselves from a government that will not. The 2nd Amendment was justified on that basis. As Jefferson said, “In a nation governed by the people themselves, the possession of arms to defend their nation against usurpers within and without was deemed absolutely necessary.” Something for us and our leaders to think about.

A Quick Look At The Indictment
I just got done listening to Fitzgerald's press conference.
I believe that in addition to Scooter Libby, the following people should be forced to resign in the wake of this scandal:
Ari Fleischer
John Ashcroft
Colin Powell
Paul O'Neill
My mailman
The grumpy lady at the social security office
The entire staff of the Internal Revenue Service
One final thought. Now that he has copious amounts of free time, perhaps Mr. Libby can track down the person who nicknamed him "Scooter" and kick his ass.

Uh his parents called him that because as he was learning to crawl he scooted around in some fashion I'm not sure exactly how. But they called him scooter and it stuck.
One comment Fitzgerald is a pit bull of a prosecutor. He goes after anyone no matter the party. If this was all he found it makes me feel pretty good. Scooter just made the same mistake Martha did. Keep yer mouth shut silly.

Depends on the crime. I hear Marc Rich got off for a quarter million, but I could be wrong. By the way, has anyone else heard anything about the Marc Rich connection in the oil for food scandal? It wouldn't be surprising to hear that the Clintons were getting kickbacks from Saddam all that time too. The sooner the Clintons are tried and hanged for treason the happier I'll be.

Forbes Calls Bloggers Dangerous.
ItÂ’s official blogs have graduated from the interesting oddity of the day to a real threat to established power. The first indication is
Denny Hastert has started a blog. Now Forbes Magazine has taken notice. Yes blogger power is uncontrolled, untamed. No matter left or right ordinary people are not supposed to be able to speak. It bucks the system and the system wants control.
This is not a left or right issue it is a freedom issue.

Blogging is what the internet ought to be about. it's a lot less dangerous that the favourite passtime of the internet browsers: pornography.
it brings real free speach around the whole world & allows people to hear different opinions/ideas that they would never come across otherwise.
there is nothing they can do about it (other than route all access through state servers as in N. Korea/China - and even that is regularly broken), so screw them.

Tony Blair Talks Back to Iran.
After Wednesdays display of stupid by IranÂ’s President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad followed almost immediately by Islamic JihadÂ’s bombing in Israel. Tony Blair has had enough.
Islamic Jihad is supported by Iran and has headquarters in Damascus Syria. Times of LondonTimes of London: Ending a one-day European Union summit, the Prime Minister called the explosive declaration by Mahmoud Ahmadinejad on Wednesday a disgrace. Promising discussions with Washington and other allies over how to react, Mr Blair said that he had often been urged not to take action against Iran. But he added: “If they carry on like this the question people will be asking us is — when are you going to do something about Iran? Can you imagine a State like that with an attitude like that having nuclear weapons?”
As Rusty just said Iran is raising the stakes. I think they are betting the US and Britain canÂ’t muster a response. With George W Bush and Tony Blair in the mix along with emerging democracy on two borders and an internal democracy movement I feel itÂ’s a bad bet. Yes itÂ’s time to deal with Iran and Syria. The struggle against intolerant nations will not be easily won. As you can see appeasement does not work. The EU has been trying that and Iran has thumbed their nose at all of us. If we fail to act they will only become more emboldened and dangerous.

It really is "send a message" time. Perhaps the US/UK should start by eliminating all the Pali military camps in Bekaa. A few well placed assassinations and explosions in various headquarters could provide a hint of our displeasure.

I saw a quote once, where Iran said they were not intimidated by the threat of a United States Military response; indeed the quote was something to the effect that they had already analyzed our failures in Iraq.
Of course Iran is basing our "military action" purely based on a the scenario of an invasion, and not a carpet bombing back to the stone age, I'm guessing their analysis did not include the "shock and awe" footage, nor did they realize the U.S did not even drop the second, nor first non-nuclear bomb in their inventory, nor deploy EMP based weapons.
It is looking almost certain this will not be settled with diplomacy.

The call by Iran to destroy Israel is, sadly, not new. In 2001, Ali Akbar Rafsanjani, a former president, suggested that the Islamic world annihilate the Jewish state with nuclear weapons, an attack that he claimed would "just produce damages" to the perpetrator. And the elimination of Israel has been a constant theme of rallies organised by the regime. Nevertheless, the speech by President Ahmadinejad in Teheran on Wednesday was shocking. He told a conference entitled "The world without Zionism" that Israel should be "wiped off the map", and expressed no doubt that the latest wave of Palestinian terrorist attacks would soon remove "this disgraceful blot from the face of the Islamic world".
Such remarks by a head of state about a fellow member of the UN are unprecedented. The nearest equivalent is China's refusal to renounce force in seeking reunification with Taiwan, a de facto sovereign entity; in July, one of its generals said his country was prepared to go to nuclear war with America over the island.
Mr Ahmadinejad's speech has been condemned by, among others, the EU, at its Hampton Court summit yesterday, America, Australia, Canada and Russia. Shamefully, there has not been a squeak from the Arab world. Do Egypt, Jordan and Mauritania, all of which have recognised Israel, have no riposte to a president who rants that they will "burn in the fire of the Islamic nation's fury" for having established diplomatic relations with Israel? Mahmoud Abbas, the Palestnian leader, condemned Islamic Jihad's suicide bombing in the Israeli coastal town of Hadera, but has had nothing to say about an existential threat by Iran, one of the movement's sponsors, to a state with which he is trying to reach a final status solution. And there has likewise been silence from governments such as those of Morroco, Qatar and Tunisia, which have sought to strengthen links with Israel following its recent withdrawal from the Gaza Strip.
Shimon Peres, who is a archetypal dove, has suggested that Iran be expelled from the UN. The proposal is pertinent. A member that calls for the destruction of another defies the purposes of the organisation's charter, and should be sanctioned by the Security Council. That body has seemed to court irrelevance over the past few years. It declined to grasp the nettle of Saddam's repeated challenges to its authority. It handed over North Korea's nuclear ambitions to six-party talks hosted by China. It has yet to take proper responsibility for a similar challenge posed by Iran, the issue remaining with the International Atomic Energy Agency, despite Teheran's cavalier attitude to repeated resolutions by the board of governers.
Mr Ahmadinejad's speeches to the UN General Assembly last month and to the Teheran conference on Wednesday have richly confirmed his reputation as a hardline ex-Revolutionary Guard. If the Security Council fails to confront such a rogue head of state, it does not deserve its name.

Yet, following his mentor, the late Ayatollah Khomeini, he declares that "Israel should be wiped off the map". He has inadvertently made manifest precisely why he needs nuclear power - at least to the Israelis and Jews, if not the bein pensants of "liberal" drawing rooms.
The attempted annihilation of Jewry, as you said, is hardly an original idea, but now, more than ever, it is likely to cost us all a good deal more than the world can afford.

Iranian President Reaffirms "Final Solution", Reveals Tehran's Weakness
Patriotism is not the last refuge of a scoundrel, antisemitism is. The great unifying theme of the Islamic world is hatred of Israel. Thus, when the President of Iran calls for
a final solution for the Jewish state in the Middle East, and then
reiterates that position again today, it is not simply an act of antisemitism, it is an act of desperation. It reveals the weakness of the Iranian theocracy's position.
Change is coming to the Middle East. Like the smell of ozone after a lightning strike it is in the air. The mullahs in Iran sense it is coming and they are afraid. Very afraid.
And what do those who have a stake in maintaining power do to distract the masses from their own plight? Blame the Jews.
There really is no "Middle Eastern culture", only "Middle Eastern cultures". Persian, Turks, Kurds and Assyrians speak different languages and have unique traditions and cultures. The "Arab street" does not exist, but there are "Arab streets". Hip-hop music, I am told, has become the language of protest for young Gazans, and while terrorist videos are sold in markets throughout the region sales of pornography are much higher.
But, if there is one thing that can unify the many Middle Eastern cultures and the many Arab streets, it is antisemitism. Nasser did not become an icononclastic hero in the Middle East for the Aswan project, he became a hero because he "stood up" to Israel.
Secular liberals, Islamists, nationalists, and even Christians in the Middle East all agree that Israel has no right to exist. Some realists might believe that peace with Israel is inevitable, but not that it is right. In the eyes of the secular left in the Middle East, and like their European and American counterparts, Israel is the last bastion of Wetern colonialism and imperialsim. To Islamists and nationalists it represents a sort of emasculation to the collective psyche. And to the long-oppressed Christians of the region it represents a source of destabilization used by their oppressors as another excuse to crack down on them. Israel, it is widely believed, is the source of injustice in the region.
So, when the President of Iran calls for the destruction of Israel the reaction from the street is a foregone conclusion: they will support him. He knows this. He is not stupid.
Iran has dreams of becoming a regional superpower. They seek nuclear power, for instance, not because the oil-rich nation really needs it, but because nuclear power represents something bigger. It puts Iran on par with the "big boys" of the industrialized world.
Iran's main disadvantage for a regional hegemony is that it is an Islamist nation unlike the larger Islamist movement. It is Shia, and compared to the Islamist theories of bin Laden or Zarqawi relatively progressive. So, what can the bin Ladenists and the followers of the Ayattolah agree upon? The destruction of the "Zionist entity."
More than this, the mullahs of Iran aren't simply trying to elevate themselves among the jihadis, they are trying to elevate themselves in the eyes of the the entire Middle East. The move to a theocratic state is probably not a great unifying theme among a region as diverse as the Middle East, but a move to wipe-out Israel is.
Even if it is only rhetoric, it is powerful rhetoric. It is the kind of rhetoric that unifies. It is the kind of rhetoric that moves people to admiration and adoration. It is the kind of rhetoric that gives power both within a country's own borders and beyond. And when a regime feels itself vulnurable, its first move will be to bolster its power.
Expect more anti-Israeli speeches in the future. As the tides of change sweep through the Middle East we should find such rhetoric more and more common.
The last resort of the scoundrals that dominate the region will be to verbally attack Israel.

The Iranians are not Arabs, so what is their beef with Israel? The Iranians are so stupid that they overlook the Final Solution that the Sunni Muslims have in store for them. Frankly, I think the whole bunch of them are crazy.
They have the resources and people to make a paradise out of the Middle East, just like Beirut used to be, but their stupid religion turns them into a bunch of lunatics. I know the situation can change, and I hope that is the outcome, but with the crazies in charge of the countries in the Mideast and the lack of freedom the people have to be productive, I fear for the outcome.

A major part of Iran's official foreign policy is to try to destroy Israel. Why is this? There are Muslim countries that have territorial disputes with Iran, Muslim countries that have fought wars against Iran, Muslim countries that supported wars against Iran, Muslim countries that have massacred Muslims (Syria, for instance, murdered 10,000 people in Hama), and Muslim countries that have occupied whole countries (Syria in Lebanon and Iraq in Kuwait).
Iran has never threatened to wipe any of these Muslim countries off the map.
Israel has done none of these things.
The only reason why Iran wants to destroy Israel is because Israel is not a Muslim country. This should give the leaders of other countries pause. Israel is only the closest and most convenient target for this kind of madness.
Curiously, the only outright criticism of Ahmadinejad's words by any Muslim or Arab politician came from a Palestinian, Saeb Erakat. The PA is usually a press office for terror gangs, but in this particular case, I need to tip my hat to Erakat for doing the right thing.
